5 Ways to Support Peace in Times of Conflict

Here are 5 Ways to Support Peace in Times of Conflict because sometimes self-care is about taking action in the face of conflict. There are many countries experiencing conflict or instability in 2023 and this post is helping you feel less powerless in the face of human suffering.

1. Contact your local MP.

If you are in the UK contacting your local MP is one of the best ways, you can act for peace. Your MP is your UK-elected Member of Parliament. They are meant to represent your interests and concerns, taking them to the House of Commons who have the power to make laws and force reigning governments into action that aligns with the people they represent. By contacting your local MP and siting your concerns, you are putting pressure on the government to take action that represents your beliefs and bring about a peaceful resolution.

2. Donate to a charity

The other thing you can do is donate to a charity that is in area/s you are concerned about. My preferred charity is Medicine sans Frontiers /MSF/ Doctors without Borders.  They are medical professionals from all over the world who travel to troubled areas and indiscriminately provide medical support, risking their own lives whilst helping others. They were present in Sierra Leone when Ebola broke out, they are currently in Palestine, Mali and Congo helping those injured. You can donate monthly or as and when you have it. Your money goes to supporting the staff and systems needed to provide ground support and not to some fat-cat or intangible “admin fees”.

3. Boycott brands

Put simply, your power is in your spending. If a company you usually buy from is not behaving in a way that represents your humanitarian beliefs, then boycott them. There are lots of small businesses that do reflect your beliefs and they would love your support. Now is the time to put your money where your mouth is.

4. Participate in peaceful marches.

If you feel inclined, you can participate in a march and meet like-minded people. It is a great opportunity to have your voice heard. Be safe, be peaceful and scope out escape routes before going. Also, be sure to take water and masks just in case chaos descends and you are teargassed.

5. Stay informed.

Information is key but be mindful of information you consume or circulate (via social media). It is best to take information from people directly affected or trusted third-party reports.

And there you have it, 5 ways to support peace and preserve human life in the face of conflict.

Be sure to look after your mental wellness in this time and remember to always…

Be good to yourself.
