We have upgraded our bars and we are super excited to share the new process with you. We have switched from heating our oils to doing the cold blend method which means we no longer heat up the oils we use when making our bars.
How is traditional soap made?
Soap is made using lye (a strong alkaline combined with water) and fat is added. Usually, the fat is melted on low heat to combine them then the lye is added to make soap.
What is the cold-blend soap-making method?
The cold-blend soap-making method simply means we do not heat the oils before we add the lye solution. Instead of heating we use a powerful stick blender to whip the oils and butters so that they mix well and become creamy and smooth. Then we add the lye and continue blending until they are fully blended.
Why do we use the cold blend soap-making method?
To retain the maximum nutrients from the fats we use. Heating the fats no matter how low, leads to degradation of quality as they lose nutrients. Most fats have already been heated and altered in some way even if they are organic and cold-pressed so by not heating them again at this stage of soaping, we retain most of the quality.
Why is the cold-blend method better for your skin?
Heat destroys the nutrients in the oils and butters making them less beneficial to the skin. The less heat used in your butters and oils the more nutrients are preserved, making the end product more beneficial to your skin. Shea butter has natural vitamins A and K, by heating it you are destroying those essential fatty acids and changing the composition of the butter making them less effective and less “good” for the skin.
Is any heat involved at all?
No, but once you add your lye water, the soap batter does heat up naturally and if insulated you get rivers of glycerine from within the soap. This is a natural chemical process which occurs whether you cold blend or not. I have noticed that our cold blend bars do produce a richer creamier lather and the shea butter scent stays in our Au Natural bar.
And there you have it, everything we do to keep your skin as beautiful and glowy as possible.
Until next time,
Be good to yourself.
