Power of the Word

When it comes to naming our products, you need to know that I love words. I grew up in an African household that believed in the power of words and their meaning. I studied Literature at university, I love mythology, I read Shakespeare and love etymology. This also means I love wordplay and puns. The element of language I love the most is its duplicity, its playfulness, how a word can mean more than one thing.

The Winning Formula

Our product naming formula is simple but layered: starting with the key ingredients, then considering function, we then add a touch of playfulness and a final flourish of pretentiousness – because our customers seem to respond well to that. I think it’s because it validates the notion that soap can be a luxury item.

Here’s a peek behind the curtain into how we chose the names of your beloved bars and butters:

Au Naturale – Unfragranced Shea Butter Bar

Sometimes, the simplest things speak the loudest. Au Naturale is our unfragranced shea butter soap, pure and gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin. We wanted a name that reflected the bar’s honest simplicity, providing a rich and creamy gentleness when cleansing. Just as the French phrase suggests, this bar celebrates being comfortable in your own skin — bare, fresh, and completely natural.

Spring Fling

With lemon, lemongrass, and lavender, this bar bursts with freshness and joy. Spring Fling felt like the perfect name because it’s playful, light-hearted, and full of zest — much like the season itself. Using it is like throwing open the windows on the first warm day of the year: uplifting, bright, and full of possibility.

Muddy Waters

Grounding and restorative, Muddy Waters is made with Dead Sea mud, activated charcoal, and shea butter. The name pays homage to the purifying, mineral-rich mud that gives this bar its deep cleansing powers. But it also evokes imagery of stillness — a quiet moment by the water, letting the earth’s elements reset and restore you. Mud baths have long been a part of civilisation, and this bar was named after the cleansing ritual.  The blend of cedarwood and lavender oils deepens this grounding energy, making it both clarifying and soothing at once.

Lemon Poppy – Exfoliating Bar

Bright, zesty, and speckled with poppy seeds, this bar was named as simply and joyfully as it smells. Lemon Poppy is fresh, energising, and a joy to use. The name captures the bar’s citrusy scent and gentle exfoliating texture, making it perfect for those mornings when you need a boost of sunshine in your routine.

Lovely Lavender – Calming Shea Butter Soap

Soft, soothing, and timeless. Let the herbaceous calmness of lavender lend itself to you. This bar is your daily reminder to slow down and breathe deeply. Infused with calming lavender, it’s designed to ease tension, nurture the skin, and bring a little peace to your day — just like its name.

Shea Magnifique – Pure Multipurpose Beauty Oil

Shea Magnifique, so called to capture the essence of something extraordinary — a beauty oil that elevates the everyday into a moment of indulgence. “Magnifique” speaks to its French-inspired elegance, a nod to timeless beauty and effortless luxury. At its core, the name reflects the oil’s versatility: a multi-purpose wonder crafted from the finest shea, designed to nurture skin, soften hair, and add a touch of radiance wherever it’s used. It’s not just an oil; it’s a celebration of nature’s magnificence bottled, reminding you that caring for yourself can feel both simple and sublime.

BARE: Unfragranced Triple Shea Body Butter

BARE was inspired by my family’s need for a rich, nourishing, all-natural moisturiser that was suitable for my dry, acne-prone skin and my son’s eczema-prone, sensitive skin. I needed to create a butter that nourishes and restores without clogging my pores, while also supporting extremely dry and damaged skin. So many of the butters available are filled with synthetic fragrances, fillers and other skin irritants that are simply not suitable to care for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

I was determined to create a butter with a few powerful ingredients that nourished and restored the skin, supporting the skin’s barrier without clogging the pores. BARE butter does just that, made with a triple helping of shea: pure organic shea butter, wild crafted shea nilotica, and hand extracted shea nut oil.  It delivers a rich concentration of vitamins A, E, and essential fatty acids that deeply nourish whilst protecting and nourishing the skin. Its silky texture melts effortlessly into the skin, absorbing quickly without clogging pores, leaving behind a soft, breathable finish. Gentle yet powerful, Bare Butter helps restore balance, strengthen the skin barrier, and provide lasting hydration — making it the perfect daily companion for skin that needs extra care and comfort.

Our product names are designed to honour their key ingredients, spark a sense of delight, or often, do both. Because we believe playfulness and lightheartedness are part of self-care.
