Black Girl Magic Day and the Importance of Sisterhood

Black Girl Magic Day

February is often synonymous with Valentine’s Day, a celebration of romantic love. However, there’s another special day, Black Girl Magic Day. A celebration dedicated to honouring and uplifting women and girls around the world. This day serves as a reminder of the extraordinary strength, brilliance and beauty of Black Women and the importance of our sisterhood community.

Our #BlackGirlMagic day is dedicated to honouring the bonds of black female friendships, a group of like-minded black women who love and cherish black women in our lives.  For mothers in particular, these friendships can be a lifeline, offering a sense of connection and belonging that is essential for their well-being.

The Significance of Black Girl Magic Day

Black Girl Magic Day was created to celebrate and amplify the voices of Black women and girls. It is a day to acknowledge our accomplishments in various fields, including arts, sciences, business, and activism. For us, however, it is a day to celebrate and uphold the black women in our lives. For us, Black Girl Magic Day is a testament to our own community of women’s unwavering resilience, beauty and brilliance, a celebration of the magic we create on our own and the magic we create together in community and comradery.

Why Sisterhood Matters

Friendships play a crucial role in our lives, providing emotional support, enhancing our mental and physical health, and contributing to our overall happiness. For black women, this is especially true as we face unique challenges inside and outside of the home. Some experiences are such that only another sister can truly understand and appreciate. This is also true for black mothers, for whom friendships and matriarchs can be even more significant.

Emotional Support

Motherhood is a rewarding, yet demanding journey filled with ups and downs. Having friends who understand and empathise with these experiences can be incredibly comforting. Mothering sisters offer a safe space to vent frustrations, share joys, and seek counsel, they also provide validation and understanding. This is particularly important for black mothers who may feel isolated or overwhelmed by their familial and societal responsibilities.

Mental Health Benefits

Friendships have been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. For black mothers, who often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, having a strong support network is a crucial factor in maintaining good mental health. Engaging in social activities with other black mothers is a great way to de-stress and take a much-needed mental break from the state of being “on” all the time. It truly takes a village to raise a family and their village is full of black women who lean on each other for support through the challenges and changes of life.

Physical Health Benefits

Friendship extends beyond emotional well-being to physical health. Studies have shown that individuals with strong social connections have lower blood pressure, reduced risk of chronic diseases, and even longer lifespans. For black women, who often prioritise their family’s health over their own (or are often expected to sacrifice themselves for their families), strong female friendships can serve as a reminder to take care of themselves and engage in healthier behaviours.

The Unique Challenges Black Mothers Face

The Dual Burden: Motherhood and Societal Expectations

Motherhood brings with it a unique set of challenges that can make maintaining friendships more difficult. In addition to time constraints, childcare responsibilities, and the demands of work and home life mothers, especially black mothers carry the dual burden of parenting while navigating societal pressures and systemic inequalities. From the persistent stereotypes that affect their parenting styles to the racial discrimination within the British educational system that impacts their children, the challenges are multifaceted. These stressors take a toll on both physical and mental health. All these things often leave little room for socialising or pursuing passions. Yet, it is precisely during these times that friendships become even more vital.

It takes a village

The early years of motherhood can be isolating. After the welcome celebrations, our partners return to work and we are left alone as primary carers for our newborns, many of us find ourselves lost, anxious and isolated. Feeling disconnected from the outside world and ourselves, we need our sisterhood for support and guidance now more than ever.  Leaning on available matriarchs, connecting with old friends and creating new ones through online platforms or play groups, will lessen feelings of isolation and anxiety associated with being a new mum.

Maintaining Identity

It’s easy for mothers to lose sight of our own identities as we focus on our children’s and family’s needs. Friends remind us of who we were outside of these roles and encourage us to engage in self-discovery activities and a better sense of self.
