Hero Ingredients: Castor Oil

castor oil

Castor Oil, 𝑅𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑠 is a vegetable oil native to Northern Africa and has been cultivated for over 6,000 years. Traditionally castor oil is used to relieve constipation, skin irritation and mild kidney and liver dysfunction.

Castor oil for medical use:

Rich in fatty acids and anti-inflammatory properties, Castor oil is applied thickly to the skin and covered in a cotton/ muslin cloth (known as a castor pack). It is then absorbed deeply through the skin and defused to the organs, where its anti-inflammatory, stimulating and antibacterial properties remove toxins and relieve symptoms.

Castor oil for glowing skin:

  • Moisturising: Castor oil’s fatty acids deeply penetrate the skin to soften and smooth and protect the skin from water loss.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Castor oil is said to help soothe minor skin irritations, like sunburn, insect bites, and eczema.
  • Antibacterial: Rich in antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, Castor oil can help treat and prevent acne by deeply cleansing the pores and removing acne-causing pollutants. Especially useful in oil cleansing, castor oil helps to break down hardened sebum, unclogging pores and killing acne-causing bacteria.
  • Antioxidant: Castor oil can help protect skin from free radicals from the sun that can accelerate signs of premature ageing.
  • Wound healing: Castor oil can help create a moist and protective environment that promotes and encourages healing.
  • Reducing puffiness: Castor oil can help reduce swelling and puffiness, especially under the eye and when used in face massage.
  • Improving skin texture: Castor oil can help improve skin’s texture and promote a healthy, smooth appearance.
  • Reduce Scarring: Its highly moisturising qualities help to fade and reduce the appearance of scaring when applied consistently.

Mature skin and Dry Types

Despite its very thick and sticky consistency, Castor oil is absorbed easily, locking in moisture whilst drawing moisture to the skin, making it especially good for dry and eczema-prone skin. For mature types (acne or dry) Castor oil is great at reducing fine lines, plumping the skin, reducing pore size, and smoothing out wrinkles, especially around the eyes, neck, chest and hands.

Hyperpigmentation & Scarring

Powerful moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties in Castor oil make it super effective in reducing hyperpigmentation and fading scars. When applied to wounds, the healing has been accelerated with less scarring. When applied to stretchmarks, they have faded and smoothed out.

After gentle exfoliation to remove dead skin and dirt, mix Shea Magnifique, Castor oil and a few drops of lemon oil, and apply to your affected areas for a natural skin smoothing, softening and brightening tonic. Remember to use a high SPF on top.

How we use castor oil:

We love castor oil, and we have it in almost everything as we harness its rich and antibacterial properties. We only use organic, cold-pressed castor oil as it contains all its natural skin healing properties.

Shea Butter Soap

Each bar uses a generous amount of organic castor oil for added moisturising and natural antibacterial properties. You get a long-lasting bar with natural antibacterial properties and softer, smoother skin.

Bare Butter

We also use organic castor oil in our ultra moisturising triple shea body butter BARE BUTTER for added moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties to soften and smooth the skin. When combined with shea castor oils anti-inflammatory properties combine with shea butter to reduce breakouts whilst their moisturising properties help lessen hyperpigmentation and discolouration from head to toe.  You are left with soft, smooth clear skin.

What type of castor oil should you use?

We only use organic cold-pressed castor oil as it is the highest quality available. Other types are chemically processed and lack essential fatty acids and vitamins, making them less beneficial for health and beauty.

How you can use castor oil for glowing skin:

  1. Add a few drops of organic castor oil to your Shea Magnifique for an all-natural, supercharged anti-wrinkle face and body oil and ultra-moisturising hair sealant.
  2. Use one of our shea butter bars for soft smooth skin, daily.
  3. Slather yourself in our organic castor, and shea butter-rich Bare Body Butter for youthful, clear glowing skin.
  4. Apply castor oil to your belly button to relieve constipation.
